<![CDATA[Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 vs Google Pixel Fold camera comparison]]> Google's first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, takes a different approach when it comes to design and software, setting it apart from the Z Fold 5 right out of the box. For its part, Samsung has stuck with the same design for the Z Fold 5, and is even using the same camera stack that was used in the Z Fold 4. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but now that Samsung is facing more competition in a smartphone segment that's growing and maturing, has Samsung done enough to compete with Google's Pixel Fold?

The Android texting service explained]]> While there have been many attempts on Google's part to launch one, there is one thing that Android has always lacked: a true messaging competitor to Apple's iMessage. The solution rests in a standard that replaces SMS, designed as a universal messaging standard - and Google has been one of the biggest proponents of this new standard, actively supporting and pushing its services through the Google Messages app, the default Android messaging app.

<![CDATA[Google officially shows off the Pixel Fold and doesn't it look slim?]]>

Google has shown off the forthcoming Pixel Fold, laying to rest any doubts about this phone's existence - and the timeline for its reveal. Google has teased the new folding phone not only on social media, but it even has a page on the Google Store for it, inviting people to sign up for more information. This also gives us a good chance to look at the Pixel Fold design - and it certainly looks like a neat package. The Pixel Fold carries hallmarks of Pixel design, clearly related to the Pixel 7 models with that camera bar across the rear, although it appears to be less pronounced. But the curves of the sides and the overall aesthetic unmistakably screams "Pixel!" to us. It also looks really slim, so that rumoured 5.7mm thickness when unfolded may be correct. The smooth hinge action can also be clearly seen.

In recent years, smartphones have been trending towards larger and larger screens. It's starting to seem like the days of compact flagships like the Google Pixel 5 are long gone. However, for those who prefer a more pocketable smartphone, all hope is not lost. The Google Pixel 7 is already smaller than the Pixel 6, and it looks like the next generation will get smaller still. For reference, the Pixel 6 had a 6.4-inch display, while the Pixel 7 sports a 6.3-inch display. Now, rumours are pointing toward the Pixel 8 utilising a 6.16-inch panel - which will likely be referred to as 6.2 inches in marketing speak.Ok, so it's not a massive reduction in size, but every little helps. And when compared to the Pro model, which is said to have a 6.7-inch display, just like the Pixel 7 Pro, it's a fairly sizable difference. As reported by 9to5Google, the news comes from display industry analyst and seasoned leaker, Ross Young.

Google appears to be testing a new change to the way the Play Store handles apps on multiple devices, and it could change the way people use it for the better. While Android has let people remotely install apps on their phones and tablets for some time, it's now thought that Google is testing a change that will have those apps automatically sync between devices. <![CDATA[Someone tried to sell a prototype Google Pixel 7a and it didn't go well]]>

We're expecting the Google Pixel 7a to be announced during the company's annual developer conference on 10 May, but the leaks continue to come as the clock ticks down. Now, someone has tried to sell a prototype handset on eBay. But things didn't go well.As you might expect, the sight of a Pixel 7a prototype up for sale probably wouldn't have gone down very well with Google and it appears that the seller came to their senses. After kicking the bidding off at $1650 we already thought that the seller was being optimistic. Then came the catch - while the phone was "in excellent cosmetic condition" its SIM tray was missing and the phone itself didn't start. That made it pretty useless beyond bragging rights. And considering the phone is going to be official pretty soon, those bragging rights are limited. Especially on a $1650 paperweight. The auction is now gone, of course, so we might never know if someone would ultimately have picked this thing up or not. We also don't know for sure why the auction was canned, but eBay simply says that the item is no longer available.

<![CDATA[Google Pixel 7a pops up in a Bluetooth certification database as launch nears]]>

The as-yet-unannounced but heavily leaked Google Pixel 7a has made an appearance in the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) database. The group approves devices that use Bluetooth, suggesting that an official announcement of the phone is just around the corner.Google is already rumoured to be ready to announce the Pixel 7a at its annual Google I/O event this 10 May, and the arrival of the device in the SIG database suggests that is indeed the case.Previous leaks suggested that the phone will be announced alongside the Google Pixel Fold, the company's first foldable phone. Both devices are then expected to go on sale shortly after, possibly in June.9to5Google spotted the SIG entry and notes that while it doesn't give the game away too much, it does at least show that the Pixel 7a has been certified for Bluetooth 5.3. That's particularly interesting when you consider that the mid-range Pixel 7 and high-end Pixel 7 Pro both support Bluetooth 5.2 technology. However, it isn't expected that the upgrade will make all that much difference to most people, especially when using the device in the real world rather than lab tests.Ultimately, the only real thing we can take from the Pixel 7a's SIG appearance is that it is indeed just around the corner, with the 10 May unveiling now more likely than ever before. The current round of rumours has Google giving the Pixel 7a a 6.1-inch Full HD+ resolution. CPU-wise, Google's Tensor G2 chip seems likely but the amount of RAM and storage still remains to be seen. If Google really is going to announce this thing at the 10 May event, we won't have to wait all that much longer to get everything confirmed at least.

Yesterday, the internet was awash with launch details for the forthcoming Google Pixel Fold and Google Pixel 7a smartphones. This has been confirmed by renowned tipster, Yogesh Brar, who also suggests that the Fold will only be available in "select regions".Pricing, he says, will be set at between $1,300 and $1,500 (approximately £1,070 to £1,240) for the Pixel Fold, and $450 to $500 (£370 to £412) for the Pixel 7a.
